How to practise

In the third trimester, living in the suspended "any day" limbo without being consumed by it can show up quietly or all at once. This guided meditation makes room for the feeling without turning it into a lesson you are meant to pass.

Late pregnancy has a strange suspended quality: every day might be the day, and the constant question can hijack your attention. This practice helps you live inside the not-knowing of timing, letting the question grow quieter so you can actually be in your days rather than perched on the edge of them.

Find a position that supports you (seated or lying down). Press play and let the guidance move at its own pace. There is no correct way to feel, and nothing to visualize on demand.

This episode is written for week 39. It fits best the limbo where every day could be the day, though you can return whenever the week feels heavy or unfamiliar.

Each week in the series stands alone. Listeners often join at their current week and circle back later; the arc rewards continuity, but nothing here assumes you have been listening since week one.

Welcome to Week Thirty-Nine.

There is a peculiar feeling to this part. Any day now could be the day, and so the mind keeps asking, with every twinge, every ache, every odd sensation, is this it? Is it starting? It can be exhausting to live perched on the edge of a moment that has not arrived.

So today we let the question grow quieter, so you can actually be in your days instead of hovering above them. Let's begin.

Let's begin by letting your body settle.

Find a position that supports you. Let the surface beneath you take your weight.

Let your eyes close, or rest them softly open.

Take one slow breath in.

And let it go.

Let's steady the breath together. In… one… … two… … three… … four…

And out, longer. Out… one… … two… … three… … four… … five… … six…

Again, in your own time.

Let the counting go.

The question, is it now, is understandable. Your body is full of new sensations, and any of them might be the beginning. But asking it a hundred times a day does not bring the moment any closer. It only keeps you tense, and pulls you out of the day you are actually in.

So let's let the question rest. Not because it does not matter, but because you do not have to hold it every minute. When the moment truly comes, you will know. Your body and your midwife will let you know. You do not have to keep watch for it.

Imagine setting the question down, the way you would put down a phone you keep compulsively checking. It is still there. You can pick it up if you need to. But for now, you can let your hands and your attention be free.

And in that freedom, just be here, in this ordinary, suspended day. It is allowed to be an ordinary day, even now. Especially now. There is nothing you have to do to make labour start, and nothing you have to watch for to be ready. You can simply live, and let the day be a day.

Now, three quiet truths. Let each one land in the body.

The first. I can live my days without standing guard over them.

Notice where you feel that, if anywhere.

The second. It will come when it comes.

Let it settle.

And the last. I do not have to answer the question every minute.

You do not have to be certain. Just let these be true.

Stay a little longer, breathing, here in this ordinary day.

And when you are ready, begin to come back. Feel your weight. Feel your hands.

Let your breath rejoin your day.

Open your eyes slowly, if they were closed.

And carry this ease gently with you.

That is the end of this week's practice.

If the not-knowing of timing is making you anxious, your midwife can talk you through what to expect and what to look out for, so you do not have to guess. You never have to sit alone with the questions.

We will meet again next week.
